What Stage of Hair Loss Are You?

Early Hair Loss Stages Norwood Scale

As people age, it is normal to experience a certain amount of shedding and thinning of the hair shaft caliber and hair volume in general.

However, in the case of Androgenetic Alopecia (which affects more than 50% of men), this shedding and loss of hair shaft caliber will be a lot more pronounced.

Thinning of the hair starts in the area around the temples or the crown or in both areas at the same time. A receding hairline results in the fronto-temporal angles becoming larger with time.

As the condition progresses a bridge of healthy hair may separate the thinning frontal zone from the thinning crown.

This bridge continues to break down and become thinner as the hair density decreases.

Eventually the remaining healthy hair in this connecting bridge will disappear altogether, leaving you with the typical bald area on top and the horse-shoe of hair left on the sides and back of the scalp.

The process of Androgenetic Alopecia is caused by the male hormone DHT binding with Androgen Receptors on certain hair follicles that cause those hair follicles to become thinner and shorter (miniaturized) resulting in a loss of hair volume and eventually the familiar male pattern baldness appearance.

Early Stage Hair Loss Treatments

Now that we have a better understanding of what causes baldness or as most people refer to it, hair loss, is there anything we can do to prevent it?

Fortunately with the advancement of medical research and treatments, there are approved methods to treat and even cure hair loss.

There are FDA approved non-surgical treatments, offering effective treatment for Androgenetic Alopecia.

Certain hair loss medication is used to treat hair loss only in men, slowing further hair loss from occurring, and improving the appearance of hair growth up to 48%.

Hair Loss Non-Surgical Solutions

The early stages of Androgenetic Alopecia can often be treated with non-surgical treatments which include:

1) Self Monitoring

This might sound obvious, but the best way to determine whether you are experiencing hairline receding or thinning of the hair on the scalp, is to keep a close eye on the situation.

Prevention is always better that cure.

Early action could very well prevent further hair loss, by simply taking medication or changing your diet.

2) Your Diet

A healthy diet is not only essential for your overall health, but can also greatly assist in the prevention of further hair loss. Your hair, scalp and hair follicles require certain vitamins and minerals to promote healthy hair growth. A poor diet can result in early hair loss, speeding up the onset of Alopecia. Important elements in your diet to maintain and promote healthy hair growth are ingesting adequate protein, iron and Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids.

3) Medication for Hair Loss & Topical Treatments

The main stay of medical treatment for preventing hair loss in men are:

Finasteride

This is the kingpin in Androgenetic Alopecia hair loss therapy as it reduces the levels of DHT that cause miniaturization of hair follicles.

In addition to stalling the process, about 48% of men on these medications may see some hair regrowth.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil based topical treatments, applied directly to the scalp, also helps slow hair loss and promote growth.

Topical treatments containing minoxidil can be purchased over the counter from most pharmacies. Oral Minoxidil is also a good potential option.

4) Mesotherapy Techniques

Low Level Light Therapy

The LaserCap® LCPRO™ and Capillus™ are medical devices that use Low Level Light Therapy (Red Light wavelength 350Hz) to promote hair growth by lengthening the growth phase (Anagen) of hair follicles and maximizing the hair shaft caliber.

Scalp Micro Pigmentation Before After Hair Loss Treatment Hswclinic Dublin

Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP)

This involves placing colour pigments on the scalp (similar to a very superficial tattoo dot), that minimizes the reflection of light from the scalp and creates the illusion of hair density.

Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplant surgery might be the best option to cure your baldness, depending on your goals and objectives and your Donor Area size and density versus your Recipient Area size.

This type of procedure is minimally invasive with a relatively quick recovery period, and it has helped many individuals to restore their hair volume and regain their self-confidence.
